J Scott

Hi my name is James Scott and I’ve been involved with design, imaging, software development, video and photography for close to 30 years. About six years ago Canon released the first true Digital SLR that was within the budget of most people and was of sufficient resolution to be of real use. I waited for that release date and purchased my Digital Rebel as soon as it became available.

I’ve always been interested in still photography but I was never really interested in working in a darkroom, cost of film and processing. Consequently I only used film cameras for personal snapshots and professionally for product photography when producing catalogs and product collateral. I used many of the early digital cameras such as the Apple Quicktake which was barely sufficient for CD or web based delivery. But in those days they were the latest and greatest, though unusable.

I got started with Photoshop at the beginning, along with Digital Darkroom by Silicon Beach Software, and helped a friend who owned a photo processing business offer most likely the very first digital restoration and film printing business in San Diego. It was painfully slow back in the day running on a Mac II and no color support in those early versions.

After many years you get burned out and I took a break from software, web and graphics development for a couple of years. I mainly focused on photography. Over the last couple of years my interest and enthusiasm for development and design has renewed. The new software and technologies have advanced enough to be refreshing to me. When you’re working with it every day for years it doesn’t seem new. You’ve got to get some distance sometimes.

Even though this website has lots of photography it also contains examples of product and event photography as well as graphic, collateral, logo, and website design. I’ll be sharing some of the things that I’ve learned over the years in Photoshop, development and design, and I’ll share some of my new discoveries as well. I encourage you to consider some of the resources that I’ve found useful and have learned from and to think about adding some of them to your library and toolset. We’ve provided links so that you can purchase them easily.

As far as James Scott Photography is concerned selected prints are available for purchase. We are available for event or product photography as well as graphic design projects. Web site development is also available.
